The First LLGA golf clinic will be on Sat April 16th from 2 til 3:30 , the Clinic will be held on the large putting green on the Range. Putting will be the topic , everything from posture to grip , alignment and swing path to reading a greens contour and speed. Drills will be provided for the students immediate feedback. The cost is 20$ and space is unlimited.

New Mexico Senior Women's Association's first tournament of 2011 was held April 11th in Las Cruces at the Sonoma Ranch Golf Course. With 72 women participating, two LLGA members placed. Cherry Sublett was 2nd low gross in Flight 2 and Linda Gammon was 1st low gross, Flight 4. Five LLGA members participated and a fun time was had by all!

Returning members will fill out the application and bring it to the Pro Shop with their $20.00 Ghin fee. We have indicated on the form to bring cash or use their credit card. You will simply collect their ghin fee and indicate it so on the bottom of the application form. That application form needs to be placed in a file so that our secretary/treasurer can pick it up and enter it in our 2011 current roster of members!

New Members will fill out the application and bring it to the Pro Shop. They will have to give you $20.00 to enter a ghin for them, but they will have to attach a separate payment of $20.00 stapled to the application to be put in the file for our secretary/treasurer to pick up and take care of entering them in the roster as a new member.

Santa Fe Senior Olympics

All women 50 and older are invited to play in the Santa Fe Senior Olympic competition held at Marty Sanchez. The event will be held at Marty on Wednesday, May 18 at 9:00 a.m. Registration for the event is now through February 25 for $12.00, and late registration is available February 28 - March 4 for $22.00

Register at the Mary Esther Gonzalez Senior Center Monday - Friday 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. 1121 Alto Street.

Linda Zingle played last year and won the gold, silver, and bronze in her age group. How about a little competition this year???

Congratulations to you all!

Thank you Chicks with Sticks for my farewell package of LLGA goodies. (May play on a tennis team USTA 4.0 in Amherst called the NetChix). I've joined a golf club here in NW MA that is the hardest I've ever played. After 2 rounds my lowest score is 102, and I hit the ball well!! Bye bye handicap. Elevated, undulating greens like dance floors, bunkers surrounding most of them, long, beautiful, green fairways, HUGE trees and quite a bit of water. (rating 71.2/slope 131). Will finally have to learn to hit those lob wedges. First day of rain today in 3 weeks, leaves are turning, feeling pretty settled in and like this was the rightest choice/place for my "dotage". See family frequently up the street and reconnecting with many old friends here in MA, in Vermont, Maine and just spent the past weekend in Cambridge. I know I'll miss NM when the snow flies, the skies are gray and the dampness gets to me, but now the novelty is pretty fun and exciting. Rural valley, hilltowns with lovely farms, hippies of all ages galore, and everything one could want in a town of 18,000 less than a mile's walk away.
So happy golfing and fall....

Member Whitney Robbins Moves To Massachusetts

Whitney will be leaving New Mexico and heading back to Massachusetts in August to live amongst friends and family. She came on board (the board too) the year the LLGA was born - as tournament chair - and was tournament chair for 4 years, took a break, then did it again for one more year. She remembers playing the course the summer it opened with Joan Baker on a day like Scotland - misty and foggy and green. "It was brand new and we were not impressed. But, look how we have all matured..."

She helped shape the LLGA to what it is today and will truly will be missed by us all. Good luck in your move and new life.

Tom's Next Clinic- Changed to Saturday, July 10

Tom Watt's next clinic for LLGA members is to be held on Saturday, July 10th at 2:00 and again at 3:30. This clinic will focus on teaching us how to hit a fade and a draw, though slight changes in ball position and feet which can allow you to manipulate the ball in flight. Being able to work the ball is a key ingredient to lowering your scores. His clinic costs $15.00 per person. What a bargain for golf instruction! Sign up by calling or checking in at the Pro Shop. Both times fill up fast. . .so don't delay!

Our annual program of lessons for young girls will start Monday, June 21 from 2-4 pm at Marty Sanchez Links. The girls will be from Girls, Inc and ages of 12-14. Holly Spellman will be the teacher. Lessons will go for 6 weeks. The last week (July 26) 2 girls and 1 LLGA member will play the great 28 together.

We need 2-4 LLGA volunteers for the weekly lessons and 9 for the last lesson playing the great 28.

"This is all about the 7 thru pitching wedge irons and how to hit the ball closer to the hole to maximize the scoring potential. A Few Spots Open for Tom's Clinics

Only 2 spots remain for Tom's next clinic "around the greens" on May 15th. The spots are in the 3:30 to 4:45 group. Tom is willing to add another clinic for "around the green" on the next Saturday, May 22nd, if enough people are interested. It will be from 3:00 till 4:15 because of a tournament on that day. Tom is very excited about the enthusiasm for the clinics and hopes the LLGA is learning as much as he is. He is also getting some pointers from Ross on how to make the clinics even better.

"Around the green" clinic will put us within 20 yards of the green in unusual and difficult situations and how to best approach the shot at hand.

Match Play 2010

• Each player is allowed 1 cancellation of any match.

• Scoring is hole to hole. Winner of hole gets 1 point.

• Lower handicap player gives strokes to the other player based on the full difference between the two handicaps

LLGA Joins NM Women's State Amateur Golf Association

Ladies of the Links Golf Association (LLGA) has just, this month, joined the New Mexico Women's State Amateur Golf Association. To fill you in on this State Association, a little background is, I feel, important to know. It was formed in 1935 and has been played every year, continuously, with the exception of WWII. Each year a new host club is selected to host the annual "match" play tournament. Over the years, this tournament has brought forth champions from New Mexico such as LPGA players Nancy Lopez, Rosie Jones, Kathy Whitworth, and Kristi Albers.

This year the tournament will be hosted by Rio Mimbres WGA in Deming, NM, during the week of August 1st thru the 5th. Participants must be a New Mexico resident. The club (LLGA) must be a member of the NMWSGA for someone from that club to participate in the tournament. This is why we decided to join the Association. We have several members who could/should consider playing in this sort of Amateur tournament! Any competitor must belong to a women's group who has paid dues to the NMWSGA.
Last year, NMWSGA had an issue in that one of the qualifiers from Santa Fe did NOT actually belong to the SFCC WGA, so she could NOT compete and was withdrawn from the competition.

By becoming a member of this Association, a portion of the annual fee ($50) is given to the HOST CLUB to help put on this tournament. By paying dues each year, we can also 'bid' to host the tournament at our course in the future. The Host Club sets the fees for the actual competition and sends fliers out closer to the tournament date, application, etc. etc. The fee varies from course to course, year to year. It depends on what the course negotiates with the tournament committee and how much money they raise. The tournament entry fees include a welcome dinner, luncheon on the final day, and no-host cocktail party, as well as the green fees, etc.

As I previously said, your Board of Directors felt this was necessary to support and truly believes we have members who could/should play in this State Amateur golf competition! As we get more information regarding your cost, etc. we will pass on to you. For those of you who qualify to play in this tournament, we wish you luck and will keep you informed as the date gets closer. If any member of our Association has any questions regarding this State competition, please feel free to call me or e-mail me. If I can not answer your questions, I have names of the Directors I will give to you.

Golf Clinics With Tom

Tom Watts will be putting on clinics for the LLGA. He wants to start with Saturday clinics at 2:00 P.M on April 17th weather permitting. The clinics will take place every other week. Each clinic cost $15 and is limited to 8 people. If enough additional ladies want to take the clinic that week, he may put on an anther one the following Tuesday. People interested in attending a clinic should call Tom at 310-0107, or sign up and pay at the pro shop to reserve a spot.

"I personally believe that balance and rhythm are the most important thoughts in a golf swing. I stress that in all my lessons. I would like to start with the putter and around the green. With a putting class I start with the grip, eye position, and ball placement. Is your putter the right size for (you), I am 5'10 and I use a 32 inch putter. Many women I teach have putters that are 3 to 4 inches longer than mine and it leads to inconsistency in the stroke. Inside and down the line is the proper way to stroke a putter so the head is released, always accelerating the head thru the ball. I also stress one third back and two thirds thru. That works for long and short putts. I have several drills that help reinforce that idea, and a teaching aid to help discover the feel of releasing the club. I want to do putting first because it requires the least amount of technique and it requires the most amount of fundamentals, and if practiced diligently it will knock off more strokes than any other practicing"

COME AND MEET THE MEMBERS OF YOUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS

7:30AM to 8:30AM Social Hour & Breakfast
9:00AM Modified Shotgun Start

FORMAT: BOARD MEMBERS WILL ROTATE IN AND OUT OF EACH GROUP.
The number of holes board members play with each group will depend upon the number of entrants.

SIGN UP: As singles so that we may better apportion the board members to the groups.

FEE:There is no fee for this first tournament of 2010. Pay the pro shop for greens fees on the day of the tournament.

DEADLINE: Friday, April 23, 5pm either in the pro shop or by phone to me.

BREAKFAST: Breakfast burritos and coffee will be provided by the Board of Directors.

Secretary: Linda Fillhardt
• Instead of a newsletter will do a blog spot for the LLGA
• Will do the membership roster and highlight new members and the board
• Send out roster monthly to members.

Treasurer: Linda Gammon
• Checking balance is approx. $8000. • 35 members
• Annual Dinner was over by $16.54
• Changing LLGA to a not for profit organization. Pam Whitney, Linda Gammon, Linda Fillhardt and Fern Goodman will meet at Linda Gammon’s on Saturday, March 27 at 3 pm to fill out paper work.

Vice President & Social: Catherine Watson
• Thanks given to Catherine for a great annual dinner at SF Brewery.
• Looking for ideas for socials…. Possible play day at another course when the course is tied up on weekends.
Will not do the Tuesdays at the great 28 this year. Not enough interest last year and the café was closed many times. May look into having “Give me A Break” as a social event.

Tournaments: Maggie Brown
• Maggie will keep track of handicaps to determine most improved player for the year. It will be based on index starting April 1 to October 31, the LLGA playing season.
• Will have mix-ups each month for membership on play days. Will look into some kind of “game” for those days.
• Meet and Greet Tournament – will have breakfast from 7:30 – 8:30. Will try to have play start at 9. Board will rotate through the play so they play with all the members. Pam will look into buying logo shirts for the board and they can wear them at tournament.
• Looking into doing a “Mystery” tournament around Halloween.
• Will use Sierra Graphics for engraving and trophies.
• Committee will decide on prizes and tournament fees. Entry fees need to be consistent throughout the year.
• Maggie’s committee comes from the membership list and should meet soon to get organized. Suggested they meet once a month.
• Will work out format for match play this year. Too many matches last year.
• Pam organizes the Invitational.
• Might have Catherine organize the food for the Hot Tamale Tournament.
• Maggie will send tournament forms to Joann Evangelista so they can be posted on the web, Linda so they can be sent to the membership and also leave some in the pro shop.

Public Relations: Joann Evangelista
• Bulletin board will be going up soon.
• Joann will be working with the city to update the website. Blog spot address will be added to the website.

Charitable Events: Cherry Sublet – no report

Clinics: Fern Goodman
• Tom will be putting together a format for ladies clinics. He wants to limit them to 8. Members should sign up with him directly. Saturday, 2pm – starting April 17… approx. cost $15.

New/Unfinished Business: Pam Whitney
• Pam is checking with the city to see about the cost of 4 ball washers and trash cans for the women. LLGA will be engraved on each.
• There is a new golf course manager.
• 14 women signed up for NM Senior Golf. Pam Whitney is the contact person. Alternate is Whitney Robbins.
